Shoulder Pain
  • Last Update: 08/08/2022

Read our article for the causes of shoulder pain, which is more common over the age of 50, and medical and natural treatment methods.

What do we do if we have persistent pain in our shoulder?

While giving information about the most common causes of chronic shoulder pain and general treatment principles, we will also talk about relaxing natural practices. 16-26% of those who consult a doctor because of pain complaints are of shoulder pain. Shoulder pain is more common in women over the age of 50. An important feature of shoulder pain is its late recovery (1 month to 18 months). When there is shoulder pain, there is usually limitation of movement in the shoulder. Loss of function, such as the inability to lift the arm, shave, wear clothes, or carry anything, is often accompanied by excruciating pain.

Risk Factors in Shoulder Pain

Occupational risks: Those who do heavy work, those who use vibrating machinery or vehicles. Using a sewing machine, repeating the same movements, such as a cashier

Athletes: Factors such as those who engage in compelling, combative sports, and being under stress pose a risk for shoulder problems.

Most Common Causes of Shoulder Pain

Problems in another organ other than the shoulder can cause pain that we call reflected pain in the shoulder. For example, gallbladder or neck hernia problems. We will talk about pain and loss of function due to shoulder-related problems. The most common ones in shoulder pain;

- Nerve compression in the shoulder,

- Muscle tear in the shoulder,

- Shoulder calcifications,

- Frozen shoulder condition

Nerve Compression in the Shoulder

Nerve compression syndrome in the shoulder is one of the most common causes of shoulder pain. It occurs as a result of compression of the nerve that supplies 70 percent of the pain sensation of the shoulder. It may occur as a result of the calcification and growth of the bone on the shoulder called the acromion, constantly disturbing and suppressing the shoulder pain nerve (suprascapular) passing under it. At the same time, this nerve can be compressed due to the increase in volume as a result of swelling or inflammation in the beams and support cuts. The patient has problems such as difficulty in moving his arms back, inability to raise his arm above his head, weakness in the shoulder muscles, and numbness spreading to the arm.

Muscle tear

Rupture of the shoulder muscles is commonly used to express shoulder pain. Full or partial tears in the tendons of the muscles called the rotator cuff surrounding the shoulder joint are mentioned. The rotator sleeve is a structure that contributes to the stability of the shoulder, surrounds the joint, and allows the joints, bones, muscles and tendons to move in a certain integrity and harmony, especially the rotational movements of the shoulder, providing many functions such as reaching, throwing, pushing, pulling and lifting. Especially in young athletes, tears occur after a sudden or compelling movement. Since these anatomical structures weaken in the elderly, rotator cuff ruptures may occur even with milder movements and strains.

Calcification

The shoulder joint is one of our joints that is very flexible and can make many different movements. Especially with the advancement of our age, the cartilages covering the ends of the bones forming the shoulder joint are eroded, their slipperiness decreases, and calcium salts can make the joint rough and increasingly inoperable. Constant friction disrupts the bone socket, joint movements become more and more difficult, and the pain becomes increasingly uncomfortable. There may be noises from the shoulder. The most obvious sign of shoulder caltification is frequent complaints of pain. Even while resting pain can be uncomfortable. The patient cannot sleep because of the pain when he lies on his arm. Reactionary swelling in the shoulder and deterioration in the surrounding tissues can be seen.

Frozen Shoulders

It is a clinical condition that presents in the form of persistent pain, limitation of movement and strain in the shoulder. It is also known as adhesive capsulitis. It occurs as a result of inflammation of the ligaments surrounding the shoulder joint. If pain and limitation of movement are not treated, the shoulder becomes unable to move. The patient cannot move his hand back and over his head. Regardless of the cause of chronic shoulder pain, the patient should be patient and know that he will recover, albeit late. Treatments cover a spectrum ranging from simple to complex, rarely surgical treatment. 90% of shoulder pains are problems that can be healed without the need for an operation. The most important point in the treatment is to relieve the patient's pain. It is a very wrong practice to include the patient in the Physical Therapy program without reducing or interrupting the shoulder pain. The patient cannot endure the programs to be applied when he has pain, and there is even an increase in his pain. This situation creates a sense of helplessness and stress in the patient, further impairing the quality of life. Known pain relievers or muscle relaxants do not help much in chronic shoulder pain.

How to Diagnose Shoulder Pain?

If for any reason you feel pain in your shoulder and have difficulty in doing some movements, take the situation seriously and go to the doctor. Early treatments will prevent the event from becoming difficult to treat and prevent loss of function in the shoulder. Your doctor will examine you after listening to you in detail. The diagnosis is made by applying many tests in the shoulder examination. If necessary, your doctor may want to make the diagnosis and rule out other diseases by requesting MRI, EMG, blood tests. Finally, the diagnosis is made.

Attention to Those With Blood Pressure And Diabetes

Cortisone treatments have short-term benefits. We don't prefer it. It can also be given into the joint. It should be used with extreme caution in patients with blood pressure and diabetes.

Intra-articular ozone injections: It is necessary to use repeatedly for a long time. It may not be enough on its own. It is also given around the joint.

Ozonated PRP: PRP (platelet rich plasma) is the use of special cells separated from our own blood with the help of laboratory in the treatment. While making a one-to-one effect, adding ozone to PRP creates an activation of up to 600 times, that is, its effects are multiplied. This method is an effective, pain-reducing and repairing application, and it is a current treatment method that has no side effects.

Natural Methods for Shoulder Pain Treatment

Mud Treatment: It is a natural treatment that you can use with peace of mind in all kinds of shoulder pain and calcification cases. You can find it ready-to-use medically. You apply this mud on your shoulder in the form of a paste, you wrap it with cling film, let it stay for 4 hours or apply it in the evening and wash it in the morning. These muds are now preferred all over the world, not only for pain but also for repairing soft tissues around the shoulder, facilitating joint movements and many other benefits.

Ozone Oil: It is a simple but relaxing application that can be applied in almost all types of shoulder pain, relaxing the muscles, reducing pain and increasing compliance with exercises. We definitely recommend this, along with other methods. We use wellozone ozone oil. Keep ozone oil in your home.

Ice Treatment: It is a simple method that you can apply at home when you have a lot of pain and if you do not have other means at hand.

Trout soup: It is an important and traditional food that can be more useful than drugs that you know for muscle, bone and ligament repair, and contributes to the reduction of pain.
