In sudden lower back stiffness, raising the legs high and pressing the spine are helpful in relieving pain. If your pain lasts more than three days, the underlying cause must be diagnosed.
There is no rule saying that doctors do not have a backache or a sore back. Today, I want to tell you the following due to the low back pain I have suffered for 3 days:
Although the causes of lower back strain are generally known, ours arose for an unexpected reason. We wanted an MRI for something else and while we were in the MRI, we also had our lower back and neck MRI done.
As you know, we take off our clothes when entering the MR and are left with a thin apron. The ambient temperature of the MR is lower than the normal room temperature. In other words, we wait for an MRI in a cold room for a long time without anything on us until the procedure is over. After the procedure was over and the radiologist said you can get up, I noticed that my back was stiff, and I couldn't move. Thus, a new reason for lower back strain has been added to the medical literature: You may experience lower back strain while having an MRI. We know that this is due to spasm and contraction in the lumbar muscles due to staying in an inappropriate position for a long time in a cold environment. We will try to explain the issue of lower back stiffness, starting from our own experience.
So, almost anyone can experience lower back strain. You have to be careful. When you reach for a glass of water or pick up a newspaper from the floor, you may suddenly become locked up and unable to move. This phenomenon is very common in our society. Although it may seem like a simple event, it is important to reveal the underlying cause.
In daily life, the cause of lower back strain and lower back contraction may be excessive use, sports injuries or accidents. It is useful to know that; Although the lumbar muscles contract, there are seemingly insignificant minor injuries to the lumbar spine or surrounding anatomical tissues that trigger this contraction.
1. Lower Back Strain Due to Muscles:
Thick muscles in the lower back keep the waist upright and provide balance. They prevent damage to our spine by abnormal movements. These muscles, which we move voluntarily, sometimes contract involuntarily when they feel a threat to our spine. The muscles at the back of the lower back work in harmony with the abdominal muscles. Weak abdominal muscles disrupt this harmony. When the lower back muscles contract, severe pain settles in the lower back, locking the person and making them unable to move. The only reason here is spasms in the muscles and ligaments surrounding our spine. Damage to the large muscles and supporting ligaments around the spine may cause inflammation, resulting in prolonged lower back pain and contractions, causing them to become chronic.
2. Deterioration of Discs Between Vertebrae:
This condition is called degenerative disc disease. One of the most common causes of lower back pain and lower back strain is the wear of the discs that act as cushions between the vertebrae, loss of height and deterioration of integrity.
When the discs deteriorate, it becomes difficult to bend back and forth, to turn the waist to the right and left. You hardly get out of bed in the morning.
Discitis: It is the name given to the inflammation of the discs between the vertebrae. It causes extreme back pain and lower back strain. This serious condition requires hospitalization.
3. Hernias:
When these discs become abnormally compressed, they move from where they are to the spinal cord. As a result, they herniate, bulge or rupture, putting pressure on the nerves. This is another cause of lower back strain. The pressure of the discs on the nerves by making bubbles causes the emergence of chemicals that cause pain and spasms. Nerve roots are damaged and inflammation occurs. This pressure on the nerve root can cause problems such as pain, numbness and tingling.
Sciatica: A specific definition of lower back strain. Likewise, depending on nerve compression, it causes symptoms such as pain, numbness, burning, tingling that continues from the hip to the back of the leg.
4. Spine Shift:
It is a condition in which one of the vertebrae in the lower back slips out of place and compresses the nerves. This abnormal condition may occur as a sudden lower back strain as a result of sudden movement, heavy lifting or exposure to stress.
5. Scoliosis:
This skeletal curvature, which does not normally cause pain, can sometimes cause sudden lower back strains. Scoliosis patients should not neglect their exercises and should be more attentive when they encounter any pain.
6. Rheumatism:
Arthritis that causes inflammation in the vertebrae, ie joint inflammations, can cause sudden lower back strains.
7. Bone Resorption:
Osteoporosis can lead to painful fractures of the vertebrae and spinal collapse. When the problem called compression fracture occurs, unbearable pain can occur. Back stiffness makes patients very uncomfortable. Sometimes patients become unable to move.
8. Pregnancy and Obesity:
In cases where the abdominal muscles are weakened and abnormal loads are placed on the waist, the back muscles are under stress and contraction, stiffness and pain occur.
9. Heavy Lifting:
It is a risk factor in itself.
Pain in Lower Back When Bending and Getting Up
Pain in the lower back when bending over and getting up is among the most common pain complaints. Extreme lower back pain seriously reduces the comfort of life. If lower back pain is mild, it will go away after some rest. When there is pain in the lower back while bending down and getting up, it would be right to rest for a certain period of time and stop physical activity.
During daily physical activities, pain may occur in the lumbar region while sitting or standing up, and this may occur due to many different situations. In this process, after resting in bed for a short time, the complaints disappear. Lifting heavy objects should be avoided in order to improve posture.
In addition, the waist area should not be left sweaty. At the same time, the area should not be exposed to the wind. When there is lower back pain, exercises should be done first and the load on the spine should be light. The stronger the lower back muscles, the less back pain you will experience.
If the complaints of pain in the lower back still continue when bending and getting up, and if there is a pain that spreads to the leg area, it is necessary to see a specialist immediately. After several tests and examinations, a personalized treatment program is applied. In this case, exercises to strengthen the lumbar region can also be done with physical therapy.
In order to reduce pain and solve spasms, the back muscles should be relaxed. In the first two or three days, ice packs can be applied with an interval of 15-20 minutes every two hours. The important point is that the ice does not come into direct contact with the skin. Otherwise, ice burns may occur. Ice application is not a wrong application, but our preference is hot application. The hot application is also not in the style of dry hot, we prefer pleasant applications such as lying on the navel stones in Turkish baths and entering the hot spring water.
Hot water is the most effective remedy for sudden back stiffness, muscle spasms, and deadlocks. The aim is to relax the muscles and relieve pain. In sudden low back stiffness, raising the legs high and pressing the spine are helpful in relieving pain.
Back stiffness is a condition that restricts physical movements very much. There are many different treatments for this condition. Especially for lower back strain, methods and drugs recommended by experts should be used. First of all, an examination by the doctor is required. Afterwards, pills or ointments that will have a relaxing effect in the waist area can be applied.
Waist stiffness can be experienced due to some inflammations. In this case, you can buy some medicines by consulting your pharmacist. First of all, it would be best to use the drugs recommended by the doctor. At the same time, the patient should rest immediately when the waist is stiff. Intense physical activities should also be avoided. This strengthens the lumbar region.
Instant applications are good for lower back strain. However, in advanced cases, it may be necessary to strengthen the lower back muscles. In this case, physical therapy and rehabilitation support may be necessary. Get immediate support with the techniques recommended by experts. If there is a very advanced problem in the lower back, surgery may also be required. In this case, the diagnosis and treatment process is important.
Lower back strain should also be protected from cold. Complaints are eliminated by not straining the waist area and keeping it warm. Patients who have frequent complaints of strain in the lumbar region should immediately consult a specialist and continue the treatment by getting information about it.
On the outside of the discs, bands of tissue known as ligaments hold the spine in place, securing tendons and muscles to the spine. On the other hand, the nerves extending to the feet exit between the vertebrae in the lower back and travel downwards. Lower back pain and stiffness are mostly caused by mechanical reasons. On the other hand, a general degeneration called spondylosis, which occurs due to wear and tear in the spine joints, discs and bones, facilitates the occurrence of lower back pain and lower back stiffness.
- Lifting heavy things
-Making push-pull movements
- Abnormal movements of the spine
- Injuries
can create this situation.
The risk of lower back strain is higher in desk workers and those who do not exercise for a long time and start exercising suddenly. Anxiety and depression can alter the perception of pain. Being under stress also causes muscle contractions.
Muscle stiffness in the waist is a problem that can always be experienced. With a sudden movement in the rush of daily life, muscle stiffness may easily occur. Muscle stiffness can cause big problems especially if you don't have time to rest. For this reason, it is necessary to act sensitively while moving around.
In case of muscle stiffness in the waist, the following measures can be taken;
- Castor oil is one of the most effective solutions for chronic and temporary back muscle pain. If castor oil is applied as a massage to the waist after heating and repeated daily, the problem will be solved in a short time.
- Cabbage leaves also have pain-relieving and muscle-relaxing components. After boiling the cabbage leaves in a pot with milk, they can be turned into a cream and applied to the waist with a creamy consistency.
- Coconut oil is also very effective for relaxing your lower back muscles. After heating 2 spoons of coconut oil, it can be applied to the waist area. You can relax your muscles by repeating this application.
- You can use ginger as the most natural pain reliever and muscle relaxant. When you have muscle stiffness in your waist, after warming the ginger root, wrap it around your waist with a cloth and massage it. It is important that you leave it in the waist area for about 30 minutes.
- Horsetail is a product recommended by experts, especially in muscle stiffness. It can be brewed in water and applied from the neck to the waist, and it shows its relaxing effect on the muscles in a short time.
