It is a treatment method that is very similar to acupuncture in form, but differs in applications, and is applied by injecting the muscles.
The most important cause of musculoskeletal pain is muscle spasm. Muscle spasm manifests itself as many pain syndromes. These are: headache, neck pain, shoulder pain, back pain, lower back pain, tendinitis (tendon wear), enthesopathies (wear and degeneration at the attachment of the tendon to the bones), ligamentitis (wearing of the ligaments that hold the bones and joints together) etc. Painful spasms (contractions) in the muscles increase the load on the joints by pressing on the muscles and tendons (the beam, the extension of the muscle that attaches to the bone), narrowing the joint space. It causes herniation, spinal osteoarthritis (calcification), painful spinal syndromes by pressing on the discs (the cushions that are located between the vertebrae and provide the flexibility of the spine). Spasm also compresses the vascular structures, causing symptoms such as coldness, chills, pain and edema in the extremities (arms, legs). In addition, as a result of pressure on the nerves, radiculopathies (radiating nerve pains) such as sciatica (leg pain), brachialgia (arm pain) occur.
Intramuscular stimulation (IMS) is an important treatment method used in the treatment of painful muscle spasms. It is also called the dry needle method. IMS is based on the principle of solving the spasm by inserting very thin needles of various lengths into the muscles that are in spasm. IMS; alone is sufficient to treat many painful diseases. IMS; It can be combined with treatment methods such as drug therapy, physical therapy, spa treatments, kinesiotherapy (treatment of diseases with exercise).
IMS; It is a Pain Treatment Method Developed by Li Dr Gunn, USA.
In IMS, this spasm is tried to be resolved by inserting a needle into the contracted and shortened muscle. A muscle often has multiple painfully contracted and shortened muscle bundles, often requiring multiple pricks. If there is fibrosis tissue development along with spasm in recurrent or chronic pain, the number of needles and the frequency of needling should be increased. However, positive results may not always be possible in fibrotic muscles.
The similarity of IMS and acupuncture is the use of needles in both. In acupuncture, the needle is placed on certain points and waited for 20 minutes. In IMS, on the other hand, the needle is inserted into the muscles that are in spasm or likely to be and immediately removed. It shows its effect immediately. In IMS, the needle is made into various tissue depths according to the neuroanatomical structure. IMS is a very effective method in the treatment of chronic musculoskeletal disorders and the pain associated with these disorders.
The usage area of IMS is quite wide. IMS has been used successfully in the treatment of the diseases shown in the table below, alone or in combination with other treatments.
Headaches, Neck and back pains, Frozen shoulder (restriction of movement of the shoulder) and other shoulder pains, Lower back pain, Tennis elbow and golfer's elbow, Painful muscle spasms, Repetitive strain injuries, Pain due to posture disorder, Fibromyalgia Partially effective, Myofascial pain syndromes, Adductor tendinitis (groin pull), Tendinitis (hand, elbow, shoulder, heel, groin), Knee pain (Chondromalacia patella), Hip pain (Adductor spasm, capsulitis), Heel pain, Sciatica, Sports injuries and rehabilitation, Jaw joint pain, Whiplash injuries, (Post-traumatic spine pain), Disc diseases (waist, neck, back).
